After a decade of teaching middle-school and high-school students, I had decided that the ability to write attractive, legible penmanship with ease was as important as it was endangered. But it wasn't until I read the essay to which I've linked below that I knew why that ability was important.
I first encountered Christina Hoff Sommers in her books Who Stole Feminism? and The War Against Boys, two of the best books on contemporary issues that I've ever read. Meanwhile, here's a sample of the good professor's own handwriting:
